The Interpreter Corps Needs You

Think diversity… Offer your linguistic skills (valuable assets) for use by Team Coast Guard and welcome on board.

If you speak and understand, or read and write a foreign language in addition to English, we would like you to join the growing USCG Auxiliary Interpreter Corps. There are current and long range needs for virtually all languages. Our current National data base includes:

Arabic (1) - Armenian (1) - Chinese (1) - Danish (2) - Farsi (1) - Finnish (2)
French (9) - German (11) - Greek (3) - Hungarian (2) - Italian (6) - Japanese (1)
Latvian (1) - Lithuanian (1) - Norwegian (2) - Polish (4) - Portuguese (1)
Russian (5) - Spanish (15) - Swedish (2) - Thai (1).

There are two (2) categories of Interpreters or Translators in the data base.

Alpha "A" - For members that fluently read, write and fluently speak one or more languages in addition to English. Qualified members in this category may be used in any authorized mission, including high profile missions with almost no limitations.

Bravo "B" - For members that speak and understand a foreign language, but many have some problems with reading or writing that language, i.e. Chinese, Creole, Hispanic, Japanese, Vietnamese, etc. Qualified members in this category may be used in any authorized mission with certain limitations, as determined by the order issuing unit.

Members interested in joining, please review the US Coast Guard Auxiliary Interpreter Website and use the online "Interpreter Aplication Form,"available online at http://cgwebs.net/interpreter/interpreter_application.asp. Assignments range from simple translations of small articles to interpretations of sophisticated Coast Guard MOU's with foreign organizations, or from one day to four or more weeks of overseas deployments on Coast Guard Cutters or Mobile Training Teams. Sometimes it involves on scene interpretation of communication, on shore or off shore. Most of these missions are "Operational Support".
